How To Resign From the False Doctrine of Tithing

Dear Pastor;
Grace, Mercy and Peace be unto you on this day of our Lord. Several weeks and months ago, you were informed of my theological shift from tithing to grace giving. After 30 years of tithing and pondering this matter in my heart and studying both camps who argue for and against tithing, I told you of my personal decision. Since that time, I have been buried in study about this topic and have concluded that the tithe teaching lacks scholarship and cannot be biblically proven in the New Covenant beyond a shadow of doubt. The tithe teachers in the body of Christ who force or mandate tithing would not withstand a cross-examination on a witness stand by a counsel of scholars, Elders and theologians who have studied to show themselves approved and rightly divided the Word of Truth.

Because of my position on this matter, I realize that it has created some conflict and probably more so to the bottom line of the church. Certainly, I am aware of that. But because of my conviction, study and the Holy Spirit, I can never return to tithing under the dispensation of Grace we now live in. Again, my thoughts and heart have changed because of revealed truth. The journey to find truth on this matter started 30 years ago. I must admit that I am overjoyed the Holy Spirit can and does teach you when you seek the truth from your heart. Because tithing is no longer my position, it is unethical for me to continue in ministry and leadership. Based on your teaching and position that leaders in your church must tithe, it is unethical for you to keep me in leadership. As I have told you in the past, if I become a hindrance to you or your church and the doctrines you set forth, I would withdraw myself from all functions and duties of leadership. As a result, I requested to be put on sabbatical until we came to a conclusion of this matter. Over the ongoing weeks and months, I’ve come to the realization that an impenetrable impasse is blocking this matter from being solved.

Now after six months, I now realize through prayer and great trepidation that my time at XXX Church has come to an end because of forced tithing methods that are wanting. When I decided to change my theology on tithing, I did it with knowledge that I would be at odds with much of the Christian community who are simply ignorant of the biblical and secular history, the land, the language, and the literature of the Jewish Levites and Priests for whom tithing was uniquely established in the Old Testament financial system because they had no land inheritance in Canaan. When I disagreed with you, I did it in the spirit of the Berean Jews who, with great respect for Paul, did not accept Paul’s message right away but choose to search the scriptures to see if what he said was true. Since I’ve been on sabbatical, I’ve searched the scriptures, read books, examined history on this tithing issue and have found that tithe teaching as propagandized in the Body of Christ today is categorically unscriptural and is tantamount to spiritual and financial extortion akin to mafia tactics. Since I do not agree with tithing, I cannot in good conscience continue to exist at XXX Church knowing that a major difference exists between you and I on this issue. After 30 thirty years of being deceived, here are my thoughts to the body of Christ.

My purpose for changing my mind goes to the core of a metateneo (The Greek word for Repent) experience. In the spirit of the Jewish Rabbi/Student relationship, my shift also represents what most Jewish Rabbis’ taught their students and that is the practice of learning how to challenge, debate and argue well with their Rabbi on Torah issues. A student who never questions what their Rabbi says would not be considered an excellent student. In the spirit of my Jewish Savior Yeshua, I’ve entered this debate because this is how Jews studied and how teaching was done. By me offering my points and your offering your counter points over the bully pulpit, we will both learn more truth on this subject. As it stands today, you and I have come down on opposite sides of this argument. In my mind that is OK among theologians. As you continue to read, know that my thoughts on this issue are only directed at the doctrine of tithing and the lack of study by those who try to teach something they have never given serious study.

In all, this situation is not so strange. It reminds me of the incident in Acts 15: 36-41 when Barnabas and Paul came into sharp dispute over the reliability of John who is also called Mark. Because of the appearance of our sharp disagreement about grace giving in the New Covenant vs. mandatory tithing under the Law of Moses in the Old Covenant, it is proper etiquette that we part company like Paul and Banarbas for now in the interest of peace and as Hebrews 12:14-15 says: 14Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: 15Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled. I know people will say, tithing was before the law, but make sure the people also know that Abraham was not commanded to give it, and what he tithed came from the spoils of war. Plus he was already made rich based on a promise God made to him not because God commanded him to tithe. There is no biblical record that Abraham tithed any of his personal wealth and the nail in the coffin is that the Bible records that he only tithed once at eighty years-old for the first time and no other text records he ever tithed again. Using Abraham as proof text is somewhat weak to build a foundation of tithing for the New Covenant. I know people will say that tithing is an expression of devotion by sincere people but the fact remains, it is still a ceremonial law and an ordinance that was nailed to the Cross. Therefore tithing is low-realm, obsolete and defunct and the pontificators of tithing ultimately introduce weakness and confusion in the minds of believers.

Let me make myself perfectly clear. If a person of their free will decides to give a percentage of their income then of course that is their decision based on Grace and not out of fear of a curse ripped from a text and given new meaning. But as soon as giving is called a tithe that’s mandated, forced, or becomes a requirement based on Malachi chapter three or Matthew chapter 23 or some other dubious implied command from the Bible, it represents poor hermeneutics and sloppy exegesis. Tithe teachers who hold Malachi 3 to the heads of God’s people like a 357 magnum and pull the trigger with a curse upon them have committed the greatest betrayal of GRACE and the work of Christ on the cross that almost rivals Judas’ betrayal of Christ with a kiss. Of everything I’ve witnessed over thirty years, no one has ever been able to explain why there are ghettos and inner cities still full of generations of tithers who remain one paycheck away from the soup kitchen. Ok, I get it, the answer has always been, they did not put their seed in the right place. Saying we’ve been blessed by tithing does not make it true Biblically. We are blessed because of the New Covenant Principles of giving, not paying tithes. None of the epistles or letters written by the Apostles instructed or exhorted New Covenant believers to tithe, not as a law, a principle or even as a voluntary practice.

In the Old Testament tithing is compulsory and does not translate to grace giving under the New Covenant. The tithe teachers throughout history have taught tithing on a weak foundation of proof text or proof texting methodology. By definition and the verses, I’ve heard used to extract tithes from people using slick fund raising techniques over my 30 years do not understand that, “a proof text is a verse or short passage from the Bible used by someone as part of his/her proof for a doctrinal belief he wishes to substantiate to others. However, since verses and passages may rely extensively on the context in which they appear for correct interpretation, pulling these verses out their context and having them stand alone in “proof” can at times be very misleading. In addition, a set of such proof texts can completely ignore other passages which, if added to the mix, might well lead to an entire different conclusion. Someone who relies strongly only on a list of proof texts in order to make a doctrinal argument may have a very weak case for his argument. Noting that a religious teacher relies heavily on proof texting is viewed in theological circles as very negative in evaluation.” For example, after my examination Malachi 3:10 and reading the whole book in its context, the infamous verse used by many to support their tithing position fail to realize this book is not talking to or suggesting any Gentile or New Covenant believer to tithe but it speaks only to certain Israelites in the promised land. Even if tithing was actually commanded in the New Covenant (Which it is not), how can anyone teach 10 percent and not teach the other tithing requirements outlined under the law. I bet no leader in today’s church would demand 22 percent of people’s income and then ask for a free will offering to boot. In fact, if we follow this logic, to obey any part of the law and not do all of it, you are guilty and accountable for all it. For tithe teachers to prove a doctrinal point, proof text methodology is essential because it allows them to ignore the context of the whole book or chapter.

According to the Jewish Mishnah and the Tulmad writers, tithes were always defined as everything eatable (food), and everything that was stored up or that grew out of the earth. In the Old Testament money was not a titheable commodity only crops, produce and cattle. For 1600 years after the tithe was established it remained a food item up to Mat 23:23 of Jesus’ time. And upon careful examination, the Pharisees extended the tithe of the Mosaic Law in the Tulmad to include spices of anise, cumin, and mint, which was never a part of the original Law of Moses or the first five books of the Bible.

Biblical History and secular history on this subject is replete with examples of the tithing wars among Christian leaders that have raged over the centuries. In history, even Martin Luther Stood for salvation by grace and not confessing to a priest. We hail him for his stand, but we pass over, ignore and fail to declare the whole counsel about the man’s tithing beliefs and that he preached against tithing way back in a sermon on August 27, 1525? The title was How Christians Should Regard Moses. Here is an excerpt from Dr. Russell Earl Kelly’s book, “Should The Church Teach Tithing” on what Luther said about Law and Grace which can be found on the internet, “The law of Moses binds only the Jews not the Gentiles. Here the Law of Moses has it place. It is no longer binding on us because it was given only to the people of Israel. And Israel accepted this law for itself and its descendants, while the Gentiles were excluded. Moses has nothing to do with us. Well will not regard him as our lawgiver—unless he agrees with both the New Testament and the natural law. For not one little period in Moses pertains to us. But the other commandments of Moses which are by nature, the Gentiles do not hold. Nor do these pertain to Gentiles, such as the TITHE and others equally fine which I wish we had done.”

You did agree that since the New Covenant standards are higher than the Old Covenant and if you ever accepted grace giving, the minimum standard would be ten percent at the start.
In the final analysis, I would have to reject that as incorrect because after Calvary there is no biblical text to support any exact percentage as a starting point in the New Testament. The principle of interpreting New Covenant Giving starting at ten percent sounds good, but it is pure assumption. The New Covenant is filled with “free-will giving principles only. Because of that, giving could range from 0 to 100 percent based on what a person has, not what a person does not have; not under compulsion or reluctantly but by ability and by the Holy Spirit’s prompting.

After thirty years of tithing, my heart aches at the carnage of mixed messages the tithe teaching community has left behind and the many shattered lives and new converts who will be damaged by this grace less teaching in the future.
As I continue in search for truth, I submit this resignation with no malice because I know that tithe teachers need forgiveness too for they know not what they do. For we all are in need of the Grace of God when disputes arise.

Author describes harbors along pathway of life

A river runs through the spiritual life of Tim DiMella.
It is a river of promise and possibilities, a river of forgiveness and renewal, a river of peace and hope.
And, with his recently published book, “A River in Redstone,” DiMella hopes to share his journey down the river’s path with others who are on a quest to better know God and their relationship with God, and to better understand God’s purpose for their life.
“God inspired me with this book,” said the 40-year-old author. “The journey I’ve taken made me realize there is always hope. If you can realize that whatever problem you are dealing with doesn’t have to be dealt with alone, then you realize that God can help you with those problems. You can turn from what is lodged in you, and face the river, face God, face life and go meet Him and walk with Him and find peace in your life.”
DiMella, who works in Special Projects/Foreign Military Sales for the Chinook Helicopter as part of the Aviation Engineering Directorate, used the Tennessee River’s path along the southern border of Redstone Arsenal as the symbolic river in his book. He describes 12 steps, or harbors along the river, that people must pass through in their journey with God.
DiMella’s journey to where he is now – in his spiritual life, family life and career – has been a long and troubled one. As a child, he experienced a life-threatening health condition, and endured both child abuse and the divorce of his parents.
“I had a lot of drama and anxiety in my life,” he said. “I was always trying to find a mentor or a father who would help me live in society without fear. I had dreams of paths and doorways leading somewhere.”
By the time he was 30, DiMella had marital problems of his own. It wasn’t long after the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001, that he also was jobless.
“I heard God calling in my life,” he said. “He told me ‘It is time to leave and follow me.’ I left everything, including my wife, for a period of time.
“I was never a religious person. But, I knew I had to use the Bible. God told me ‘I’m going to teach you what you should have learned as a child to be happy. I’m going to teach you how to live in a world filled with ups and downs, and how to deal with people and reality itself.’”
A counselor also helped DiMella to see what life was all about, to understand the meaning of unconditional love and to realize he could control his life with the help of God.
As DiMella began rebuilding his own life, he read the Bible and wrote down his feelings toward God. He found the path of life in Revelations, Chapter 22, and Ezekial, Chapter 47.
“Revelations is all about the healing process of an individual,” he said. “It’s about what you go through in your soul. You go from a dark and scary place to a heavenly place.”
Eventually, DiMella mended his problems with his wife and the two got back together. They began going to church together.
“This particular church helped me understand the basics of Christ and helped affirm my journey with Him,” he said. “But, others can only take you so far in understanding who you are. You need to find your own self, your own church in you. You are you and eventually it’s you who needs to mature by traveling down your own path with God.”
In that way, DiMella said, people can find a true intimacy with God, themselves and others.
In search of new career opportunities, DiMella moved to Huntsville. After working for private industry, he was hired by the Aviation Engineering Directorate.
By chance, DiMella discovered the Col. Carroll D. Hudson Recreation Area on Redstone Arsenal.
“I went down to the river and it really spoke to me,” DiMella said. “A couple of years later, God said ‘Now, it’s time for you to deliver on what I’ve taught you.’ I realized the river was symbolic of where my journey began.”
DiMella has reduced seven years of writing about God into his 40-page book, which is based on a 12-step program to build a strong faith through Christ. It uses an actual path near the Tennessee River on Redstone Arsenal to represent the path Christ led DiMella on to free him from an abusive childhood, and lead him into a life as a loving and confident adult.
The book begins at the Hudson recreation area and includes inspirational writings for several areas on Redstone Arsenal, including the Rustic Lodge, treatment complex, the dock on the Tennessee River, a clearing near the river where there is a Tree of Life and a Tree of Knowledge, some benches in the woods, a swampy area with a raised walkway known as the overlook, a bridge in the woods and the river’s chapel. Each location represents a harbor where people can connect with God.
“I noticed all these different points along the river that resembled my own journey,” DiMella said. “The Rustic Lodge resembles how you feel when you believe things about yourself that are not true and your soul grows rustic. The gate represents making a commitment, to decide which way to go on your journey for the truth. The clearing is the place where you become enlightened about who you really are and why you do the things you do.”
In the end, readers find themselves at the 11th harbor, known as the Freedom Harbor. It is the point in the journey where readers take what they’ve learned from their journey and live with the truth in their everyday lives. The 12th harbor is heaven.
DiMella’s book was published by FC Publishing, a new publishing company owned by Frank Chase Jr., a writer for PS Magazine at the Logistics Support Activity and a publisher of his own book, “False Roads to Manhood.” “A River in Redstone” is the second book published by FC Publishing.
“I have wanted to for quite some time publish another author’s book,” Chase said. “I knew how difficult it was for me to get my book published. So, I wanted to help others.”
After reading DiMella’s manuscript, Chase thought it would be a good second book for his publishing house.
“I could identify with this book,” he said. “It’s dealing with recovery. It uses scenery along the river to help people contemplate life, deal with life and seek God. It uses the nature God created to help people through the process. It really intrigued me.”
Chase is thankful for the opportunity to publish DiMella’s book – and for the friendship that has developed between the two men. Both survived difficult childhoods, both served in the military and both want to help others in the journey to being fulfilled in God.
“I am amazed how God brought us together from two different perspectives in life,” said Chase, who is also a minister. “We are the same in a lot of ways. No matter who we are or the color we are, we are men and we go down false roads.”
In his journey, which included many false roads, DiMella said everything he went through led him to find truth in God. But, it wasn’t until he purposely made a decision to follow God, that the truth about his life was revealed to him.
“He brought me to the right place at the right time,” he said. “As long as I kept to the path and the harbors in life, I progressed to the miracle. And, that miracle is about learning the truth of who I am and who I am with God.”
But, that didn’t mean writing about his experiences was easy.
“It was so emotional that I almost wanted to put the pen down,” he said. “I realized that when you are writing like this you’re writing to heal other people. But, you are also writing to heal yourself.”

I think the book False Roads To Manhood, What Women Need To Know; What Men Need To Understand is an awesome book and a must read for men and women. In a society that thrives on image and sometime perceptions that are not always accurate, we need certain roles and responsibilities clarified. It's important that we not only identify what a man is but we also need to identify what a man is not. We have used pieces of False Roads To Manhood in our Fatherhood Program F.A.M.I.L.Y. (Fathers As Mentors In Learning Years) at Head Start. Our men have been very receptive and it has exposed our men to the myths of manhood that Frank Chase Jr. outlined in the book.

FRANK CHASE, JR., a native of Baltimore, Maryland, served in the United States Army and is now an ordained Deacon and a Minister at Emmanuel Church International in Decatur, Alabama. Frank also serves as a contributing writer and editor for the church’s newsletter, The Flame. As a lay minister, he has served as a teacher, counselor, mentor and leader in men’s ministries and is also a noted conference speaker.
We wanted to feature Frank Chase for quite some time and finally got our schedules coordinated. Here is the result of that interview.

BMIA.com: You have a diverse background. Where did you grow up? Go to school?

FC, Jr.: Believe it or not Gary; I grew up in your neck of the woods (Baltimore, MD). Back then it was called the Junction. I grew up on 2212 Garrison Boulevard and lived around the North Avenue area for a while and the Glen Falls Medical Center area. As far as school, I spent my elementary school years at Edgewood Elementary, and then I went to Garrison Junior High school and finished out and graduated from Walbrook Senior High School in 1979 in the Junction. I went to college in another state, and graduated from Washington State University in 1989 with a BA degree in Communications.

BMIA.com: What lead you to write the book “False Roads To Manhood: What Women Need To Know, What Men Need To Understand?”

FC, Jr.: For years, I've always desired to write a book. I didn't know what subject it would entail, but my intrigue and passion concerning the rites of passage into manhood drove this book from my heart to paper and experiencing divorce. Getting to the point of your question, Gary, God sparked a match in my soul to write False Roads to Manhood, What Women Need To Know; What Men Need to Understand to help men and women recover from failed relationships and to ensure that no man would go through what I went through trying to heal and deal with hurt and pain. Another aspect that brought this docu-story to life is seeing men struggle with failure and success. Those last two words are loaded. In any case, I wanted to write something to empower, teach and heal male and female, youth, men and women so they wouldn’t travel false roads to manhood or womanhood. In the end, Gary, men in all kinds of predicaments inspired me to write this book. However, I think the question is not what lead me to write this book, but who inspired me to write False Roads to Manhood.

BMIA.com: What is that you want the reader to learn or “get” as a result of reading your book?

FC, Jr.: Readers will learn about destiny, purpose and about exit ramps from false roads. They will gain an understanding often missed in the noise of conversation and dialogue. When a person reads my book they will get an understanding about themselves and the complex emotions of men. Now I know that sounds like a misnomer, but light will begin to illuminate when people read this book. To pull from a scripture text, the words of this book will be a lamp to readers’ feet and a light to a pathway of insight. They will walk away saying, “I’m glad for the heads up!”

BMIA.com: How long have you been involved in the ministry?

FC, Jr.: Gary, I was called to the ministry when I was 20 years old. After I gave my life to Christ, I did a double take on God and ran for twenty years, but never far enough away. I stayed in the shadows of ministry, hoping God would not catch up to me. But He did and I finally submitted to the call, plan and purpose He had for my life. Let me tell you, I now have a little understanding of what Noah experienced in the Bible when he decided to run from God’s mission.

BMIA.com: Who do you look up to and admire?

FC, Jr.: Gary, without reservation, I look up to God first, but to answer your question, my Pastor and spiritual father, Apostle Karockas Watkins and his wife Audra Watkins, hands down are the people I look up to and admire. You have to know their story to appreciate why I speak so highly of them. That’s why he’s on the front cover of my book for the foreword. To say more would lead into a long written dissertation.

BMIA.com: What have you learned about the “souls of men?”

FC, Jr.: The “souls of men” are waiting to be called out into their manhood by the community of men. They’re yearning to be called son by their earthly father, but don’ t know that God the Father has knighted them as Sons of the Father.

BMIA.com: You been quoted as saying: “It's time for men across the world to "break free" from the traditions of men.” What does that mean?

FC, Jr.: Gary, breaking free from the traditions of men simply means you can be the man without apology. Society often defines a man in different ways until they seek false images of manhood and not authentic manhood. Breaking free means, abandoning truancy, rejecting rejection, killing anger, turning discouragement into encouragement, not becoming emotionally or physically incarcerated, embracing trust in relationships and never embrace ignorance because it is not good for a man or a women to be without knowledge, don’t let offenses define who you are as a man and don’t become a nomad in the lives of people around you who care.

BMIA.com: What motivates you to do what you do?

FC, Jr.: I would say the Joy of the Lord which is my strength motivates me to do what I do. In addition, when people come back to me and echo how much my book gave them insight, reconfirms what God spoke to me eight years ago about how this book would change lives in ways I may never hear about. I’m motivated by manhood in Christ.

BMIA.com: Who’s the most influential person in your life? Why?
FC, Jr.: Gary, right now as I stated earlier in the interview, my pastor Apostle Karockas Watkins is very influential in my life because he pushes me to excellence. I often feel like I have a hand in my back and a voice in my ear saying, “Son, go for the gusto!” You ask why he’s the most influential. I believe it’s because I see in his life a drive for God and people that makes me want to go with him to another dimension. He’s a man of excellence that wants every person he meets to discover their destiny and purpose.

BMIA.com: What’s your definition of courage?

FC, Jr.: To know that I’m the head and not the tail, above and not beneath. Courage is not allowing people to define your life because if they can, then they will determine your destiny. Courage is: commitment over ugly responses amid guided excellence. Courage also means admitting to wrong when everything in you says run and hide.

BMIA.com: What do men in general need to know or do to improve themselves?

FC, Jr.: Men need to know who they are in Christ. They need to know that their background doesn’t determine their future. Look, I was a 2-pound pre-mature baby when I was born. I am a living miracle. Medical science said I should not have survived, but destiny on my life understood that death could not stop me from living. I think when you fully understand your destiny you can’t be stopped. Even death must take a back seat until your work is done. Also, men improve themselves by reaching back to others to usher them into the promise of authentic Godly manhood.

BMIA.com: What role do women play in this improvement process?
FC, Jr.: Every woman needs to know that they are important to the man and vice versa. I would encourage women to read proverbs 31 in the Bible and there will be no doubt how women improve the process!
BMIA.com: How can people reading this article support you and your work?

FC, Jr.: This may sound self-serving, but I think reading my book and providing comments on my web site guest book is great support and encouragement. People can also support my work by logging on to my website to read the articles I’ve written to gain a better understanding of my purpose and passion. I want to bring reconciliation to the hearts of men so that men and women receive healing from past hurts, which brings cooperation with each other. Word of mouth advertisement about my book is the most effective way to bring others to my website. Purchasing False Roads To Manhood would bring financial support to my God given purpose to plant seeds of healing into the hearts of men, one man at a time.

BMIA.com: What’s the best part about being Frank Chase, Jr.?

FC, Jr.: The best part about me is that I’m a born again believer who loves God and wants the best for my life and family, spiritually and financially by the truth of the Word. I understand that there is a seed of goodness in everyone even when you’ve been wronged. I’m not too serious about me and at the end of the day it’s all smiles even in the midst of trouble or struggle. The other best part of me is what my name means. Frank means “Free Man” and the spiritual connotation of my name is “Shining.” So, I’m a free man that shines. That’s the sum of me.

BMIA.com: Where do you draw your strength?

FC, Jr.: I draw my strength from the joy of the Lord because the joy of the Lord is my strength. I also draw strength from my brothers in Christ through fellowship and intimate connection with them as men. As I said in my book, it takes men to teach men. So as an iron sharpens an iron, other men of purpose who influence my life sharpen me. I surround myself with men who know their purpose in life and draw strength from Them.

BMIA.com: Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

FC, Jr.: I see myself holding life-changing seminars, with my book as a number one New York Times best seller. As an author and President of FC Publishing, LLC, I see myself publishing at least 5 books in the next five years of other clients. I’ll take you on a more in depth journey. I see my book as a major play, then a written screenplay for the silver screen. Now that’s vision and without a vision people perish. I don’t see the future; I have visions of the future. Don’t take this as arrogant, I’m just bubbling over with words of confidence.

BMIA.com: What is the biggest challenge facing black men in America?

FC, Jr.: Let me say this Gary, he who reads leads. We have to read about our history and remain vigilant. Like the Jews, we need to pass on our history to the younger generation so they will know where they are going. I think our challenge as black men is that we are not imparting or equipping other men and youth to take the baton of the future. We must educate, teach, train and never get trapped in the blame game. We must stand up and say, “Hey, young brother, come here! We must call them into their destiny and not let them fend for themselves on false roads to manhood.

One of the more unusual books that has crossed my desk on the subject of men and manhood deals with many of the lies that boys and men have been told over the years by the press, school, church, and even our families. “False Roads to Manhood” is a detailed work from author Frank Chase, Jr. (2005, 288 pages, FC Publishing, LLC).

I can assure you this book will not be finished by the end of a weekend. It is designed to challenge the reader to explore some of the lies that they have been bombarded with over the years, and how a young man (or not so young man) can find their way out to the wilderness, and into a path of meaningful manhood.

Chase handles such topics as rejection, incarceration, truancy, and the need for an overcoming spirit in life’s discouragements. While he doesn’t offer a pretense that he is an expert, he does write from a standpoint of sharing his wisdom and life experiences with an upcoming generation of young men.

With ten sections, and forty chapters, this book is not a book that one will be able to finish in one weekend. However, with a little persistence, and an eye on detail, one could digest it over the course of a few spare weekends. There are some bonuses enclosed in the way of poetry and scripture verses. FALSE ROADS TO MANHOOD by Frank Chase, Jr. is a must read. This book is for every person that is capable of being real with himself concerning the concept of what truly makes a man a man. This book will force you to deal with many of the urgent needs that every man will eventually have to face as they make their way through this journey that we call life. Chase did an excellent job weaving these concepts with Biblical scripture, and as you read this book your “inner man” will continue to be fed in the process. Frank Chase, Jr., is ahead of his time as a writer. I believe that this book needs to be personally put into every man's hand so that he may have the understanding required to make the transition.

Chasing life’s dream
takes perseverance

Writing an inspirational book presents a challenge itself. But try writing it, publishing it and promoting it on your own. That’s what Frank Chase Jr. has accomplished; and his journey isn’t finished. Chase, writer for PS Magazine at the Logistics Support Activity, hopes to see his book “False Roads to Manhood” become a play and a movie.

ON RIGHT ROAD—Frank Chase Jr., of Logistics Support Activity, has self-published his inspirational book which was first printed in 2004. “It may not be in my lifetime but I’m still pushing for that, aiming for that and I’m praying for that, too,” he said. “I think the most rewarding experience is to see people
come back and tell me how much the book changed their lives. If I had not followed the direction of the Lord, then I would not see the results I’m seeing today.” His book was first printed in 2004 and had a makeover in January 2005. He originally directed the book toward men – to describe the pitfalls they can fall into along life’s road – but found that women also benefited from its message. So, he changed the book’s subtitle from “Breaking free from the false traditions of men” to a more-universal “What women need to know, what men need to understand.”

The book’s cover was also changed. Designed in New York by Marion Designs, the cover depicts a man walking on a road. Discussion questions were added to the book; and the interior was reformatted. The book’s layout was done by Lisa Gibson-Wilson of the Renaissance Studio of Design in New York. Chase’s publishing company, FC Publishing LLC, has the slogan “Where words from the heart become books forever.” “And that’s our mission,” the Baltimore, Md., native said. “Our mission is to publish books that will be insightful, encouraging and beneficial to men and women and youth.” Some 2,500 copies have been ordered for the latest printing. The promotional materials include 5,000 book marks and 5,000 palm cards. About two months ago, the book became available at amazon.com. It’s also available at the publishing web site, www.fcpublishing.com, and at the Family Christian Bookstore on University Drive.

“I’ve learned that perseverance is the key,” Chase said, “because the publishing world is a tough business.”
There have been “pit experiences,” he said, but the bad have turned out good in the end. “So I’ve had a positive journey.”
He expressed his appreciation to all the people involved with him in this journey including the men who shared their stories in his book; his wife, Teresa; his pastor, Karockas Watkins of Emmanuel Church International in Decatur, and his fellow church members for their continued support. The Madison resident serves as editor of the church’s monthly newsletter, “The Flame,” and is being trained as a minister.
Besides seeing his book someday evolve into a play and a movie, he hopes to become a full-time publisher.
“I would describe the process of publishing this book as challenging,” Chase, 46, said. “You have to do your homework. If you don’t do your homework, you’ll make mistakes. With anything you’ll make mistakes but you don’t let those things stop you from moving forward. I’m learning more and more everyday about the publishing business.”
And he’s drawing more and more satisfaction from readers like Brittney Ryce, 16, of Madison, who wrote him a letter last December asking his advice on becoming an author.
